In short
First, open the menu’s public link directly in a browser. If the link works but the camera cannot read the code, check the print. If the link fails too, check the destination, publication status or connection. Do not delete the menu as your first troubleshooting step.
Find the failure before changing anything
A QR menu has three parts: the printed code, the address it contains and the menu page at that address. A working camera scan does not prove the destination is available, and a broken link does not necessarily mean you need a new QR image.
If you are a guest, ask staff for the menu or its direct link. The restaurant or service hosting the menu must fix a missing page. You do not need to install an unfamiliar app or enter payment details just to troubleshoot a browsing menu.
- No link appears in the camera
- Check the printed code, lighting and camera.
- The scan opens an error or login
- Check the exact public URL and whether the menu is published.
- The menu opens, but prices are old
- Check the selected menu, saved changes and the page you opened.
- The browser keeps loading
- Test the direct URL, connection and another device.
In Menupresso, open the correct menu in the editor and copy the public address from Share. Compare it with the address opened by the printed code. Test in a private browser window, where you are not relying on an owner login.
The restaurant QR code will not scan
If the direct menu link opens but the camera shows no link, work on the code and its surroundings first:
- Clean the camera lens and the table card. Move out of glare and try with better lighting.
- Keep the whole square in view and move the phone gradually closer or farther away. Check another phone before replacing every code.
- Look for scratches, a fold, smudged ink or a sticker covering part of the pattern. Replace damaged copies.
- Use a sharp export with dark modules on a light background. Do not stretch the square or crop its surrounding blank space.
- Test one print at its final size and at the distance a seated guest will use. A successful scan from a bright computer screen is not a print test.
DENSO WAVE specifies a blank margin of four modules around a standard QR code. A module is one small square in the pattern; the margin is not a fixed number of millimeters for every print size. Keep text, logos and card decoration outside it. See DENSO WAVE’s code-area guidance.
On an iPhone, use Camera or Code Scanner and open the detected link. Apple provides instructions for both scanning methods. If a phone still cannot scan, offer the direct menu link or a paper menu.
The QR code scans, but the link is broken
Read the address the scan opens. It should be the guest-facing menu, not an editor, dashboard or file that requires the owner’s account. In Menupresso, the public menu address uses /m/; a /dashboard/ address is for managing the account.
Check the complete address against Share, including its menu identifier. A different menu has a different URL even if the restaurant name is the same.
Menupresso checks
- Open the original menu, not a newly created replacement.
- Check that its status is Live. A Draft menu is unavailable to guests.
- Save your changes, then reopen the public link outside the editor.
- If the original was deleted, do not assume a new menu will restore its old address. Check the destination before printing a replacement.
If another QR service sits between the printed code and the menu, check that service’s redirect as well as the final menu URL. A working final page cannot fix an unavailable intermediary link.
If a sticker has been covered or the scan opens an unexpected website, stop using that card and ask the restaurant to verify it. Do not continue through an unfamiliar login or payment prompt.
The menu loads slowly or not at all
Open the exact public link on another device and compare Wi-Fi with mobile data. If it works on one connection but not the other, investigate the network before redesigning the QR code. If it fails across devices and networks, check publication status and contact the hosting service.
A menu QR code does not provide internet access. Guests still need a connection to open a web page that has not already been loaded. Check reception at the actual tables, not only beside the router.
If the page eventually appears but is hard to use, distinguish loading from readability. A print-sized PDF can require zooming even on a fast connection. Large images or documents can also be worth reviewing, but do not assume every slow menu is a PDF problem.
During service, provide the current paper menu or help the guest directly while you investigate. Do not make repeated scanning the only route to seeing dishes and prices.
Check this before printing another batch
- The encoded address opens the right public menu without signing in.
- The menu is Live, edits are saved and every visible price is current.
- The print has clear contrast, an intact blank margin and no glare across the pattern.
- The final-sized sample scans on more than one phone at a real table.
- Staff know the direct menu link and where to find a paper alternative.
If you still need help, note the public URL, what happened, the device/browser and whether the failure also occurs on another connection. A screenshot of the error can help. Do not send passwords or guest information. Contact Menupresso support for a Menupresso menu.
Common QR-menu questions
Do printed QR codes expire?
The printed pattern does not have a timer. Its destination or an intermediary service can stop working. For a Menupresso menu, keep the original menu published at its existing link; do not treat that as a promise that any deleted or third-party URL will keep working.
Will downloading another QR code fix the menu?
Only if the problem is the image or the address it encodes. A new image pointing to the same unavailable page will not fix the destination.
Can I change prices without reprinting?
Yes, when you edit and save the same live Menupresso menu. Keep its public address unchanged and refresh the guest page to check the result.
