Izakaya menu example small plates, skewers and sake.

An izakaya is a Japanese pub: people drink and order small plates as they go. This example keeps the plates small and cheap, so a table orders a few at a time.

What to put on an izakaya menu

  1. 1

    Small plates

Edamame, karaage, gyoza. Put a quick one first, like edamame, to eat with the first drink.

  2. 2

    Yakitori

Chicken first, since yakitori means grilled chicken, then pork and vegetables.

  3. 3

    Sushi

A short list of nigiri for guests who want raw fish.

  4. 4

    Rice and noodles

Something filling to end the night, like a rice bowl or cold soba.

  5. 5

    Sake and drinks

Group sake from light to rich, and add beer and highballs.

Before you print the QR code

  • Yakitori says how many skewers come in an order.
  • Dishes with dashi say if it's made from fish or seaweed, for vegetarians.
  • The kitchen's last order time is on the menu.

Edits go live on the same link, so a printed code keeps working. Read the setup guide

Questions about an izakaya menu

What's the difference between an izakaya and a sushi bar?

An izakaya is a drinking place with many cooked small plates. A sushi bar focuses on raw fish at the counter.

Should small plates come out together?

Most izakayas send them out as they're ready. Say so in a section note, so guests aren't surprised when dishes arrive one by one.

How do I show yakitori seasoning?

Shio means salt, and tare is a sweet soy glaze. Say which one, or let guests choose.
